Do Babies Need Cow’s Milk?
by: Wyatt Myers
Most parents switch from breast milk (or formula) to pasteurized cow's milk around one year of age. A few months ago, we made the switch with our son, thinking it would be easy. But he flat-out refused to drink it—at first. We continued to try (using the tips in this article to coax!) until we finally succeeded, but a lingering question remained for me and my wife: Knowing how important breast milk and breastfeeding is for a child, was our son missing out on essential nutrients by making this switch from breast milk to cow's milk? Here, experts explain why many parents make the switch and how to handle the transition.
Why switch?
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), once your baby celebrates his first birthday, you can begin to offer him cow's milk, provided he is eating a variety of solid foods (cereals, vegetables, fruits, and meats). Many parents continue to breastfeed beyond their child's first birthday. The World Health Organization actually recommends breastfeeding (in addition to age-appropriate solid foods) until a child is at least 2 years old given the many benefits of breastfeeding and human milk. But if you (or your baby) are ready to wean and your baby is at least 1 year old, you can safely transition to cow's milk.
Whole milk or low-fat?
Whole milk provides many of the important nutrients babies needs. If you're concerned (like we were) that your child might be missing out on important nutrients, don't be. According to Heather Russell, R.D., a pediatric registered dietitian at St. Joseph's Children's Hospital in Paterson, New Jersey, "It is appropriate to advance the child to whole milk after one year, so the child will continue to receive calcium, phosphorus, and vitamin D to help with development and growth of teeth and bones."
If a mother and her baby are ready to transition from breast milk to cow's milk, the consensus among our experts is that whole, vitamin D-fortified cow's milk is the best choice unless the child has weight issues. At this age, fat should make up about half of a baby's daily caloric intake, so the higher fat content in whole milk is essential. Babies also need the vitamin A available from whole milk.
However, according to the AAP, if your baby is overweight or at risk of being overweight, or you have a family history of obesity, high blood pressure, or heart disease, your baby's pediatrician might recommend 2 percent milk as an alternative. One percent or skim milk are not recommended until your baby reaches his second birthday. For babies with no risk factors, whole milk is preferred.
"I usually recommend whole milk until the second year of age due to its higher fat content, which is necessary for proper brain development and growth," says Russell. "However, in certain cases if the child is already overweight or has a history of cardiac issues such as high cholesterol, I would recommend 2 percent milk."
Some parents choose organic milk because of concerns over the use of bovine growth hormone in dairy cows. "There is no data concerning bovine growth hormone sufficient enough to recommend organic," says Ari Brown, M.D., a pediatrician in Austin, Texas, and co-author of Expecting 411, Baby 411 and Toddler 411. "Plus, some manufacturers of commercial non-organic milk are rBGH free now, too."
Tips for making the switch
Sometimes, switching to whole milk can be challenging not only for parents, but for the baby, too. At first, your baby might refuse to drink the milk, especially if he doesn't like the taste or isn't accustomed to drinking from a cup. Here are some tips for helping your baby transition to cow's milk:
- Gradually switch from breast or bottle to a cup before your baby's first birthday, says Dr. Russell, so that he can get used to drinking from another source.
- If your baby is rejecting the cow's milk because of the taste, start by combining it with breast milk. "Sometimes if mom can pump some milk and mix some of the cow's milk with it to get them used to the taste, that helps," says Kenneth Wible, M.D., medical director of the Pediatric Care Center at Children's Mercy Hospitals and Clinics in Kansas City. "Then they can gradually increase the percentage of cow's milk and reduce the amount of breast milk."
- Russell adds that persistence is key as you make the transition. "Parents might find it helpful to offer the milk in small spoonfuls or mixed with familiar foods until the child gets more accustomed to the new taste," she says. "Using a fun or colorful cup might also help to encourage the child to try the milk."
Generally, your 1- to 2-year-old should have between 16 and 24 ounces of milk each day. The AAP cautions parents to limit a baby's milk intake to one quart (32 ounces) per day. More than this can provide too many calories and may decrease a baby's appetite for other foods. Offer cow's milk at mealtimes, along with some water, or in between meals as a snack. If you're struggling with getting your baby to drink milk, you can try whole-fat yogurt made especially for babies, or calcium-rich vegetables like broccoli, Brussels sprouts, leafy greens, or pinto beans. Juices fortified with calcium or whole soy milk can also be good choices.
Some babies transition to cow's milk at age 1, others at age 2 or 3, and some never acquire a taste for cow's milk. Every baby is different. Your baby will let you know when he is ready for a new skill (drinking from a cup) and a new taste (cow's milk).
Human Milk for Human Babies
Breastfeeding is the natural continuation of pregnancy. Human babies are meant to receive their mothers’ milk immediately after they are born, and for about the first six months of life, mothers’ milk is all that babies need to promote normal, healthy growth and development. Breastmilk contains scores, even hundreds of factors that protect the newborn from illness and provide exactly the balance of proteins, healthy fats and sugars, and everything else the baby needs to continue the growth that began in the womb and produced the amazing little human being that he is at birth. A healthy newborn does not need anything other than his mother’s milk; in fact, anything else given to the baby will change the perfect balance in his gut (intestinal tract) and will interfere with nature’s provision of a perfect system to protect him from all of the bacteria and viruses that are present around him once he leaves the safety of the womb and comes into the world. Because of this, no formula, water or anything else should be given to the baby unless there is a medical reason for it. (AAP Policy Statement on Breastfeeding and the Use of Human Milk. http://aappolicy.aappublications.org/cgi/content/full/pediatrics;115/2/496). Supplements of water or formula given to the breastfeeding baby also “interfere with the mother to infant biology of breastfeeding,” (A Woman’s Guide to Breastfeeding, American Academy of Pediatrics, 2002, p. 11), and will result in the mother having a lower milk supply and the baby receiving less benefit from her milk.
Although formula companies want us to believe that their products come close to breastmilk, and they spend millions of dollars advertising the “new” components that they discover and add to an increasing number of formulas available, the truth is that breastmilk can never be duplicated. Breastmilk is a living, changing fluid. Each mother’s milk contains antibodies to exactly the germs that she and her baby are exposed to in their own environment. As the baby grows, there are also changes that take place in the make-up of the milk that make it perfectly suited to the changing needs of the newborn, infant and toddler. Dr. Jack Newman, a leading expert in the breastfeeding field, states: “The differences between cow’s milk and formula are much smaller than the differences between formula and breastmilk.” (Newman, Jack, MD. The Ultimate Breastfeeding Book of Answers, Prima Publishing Roseville, CA: 2000, p. 13.) He goes on to say: “All pregnant women and their families need to know the risks of formula feeding. It does matter. All should be encouraged to breastfeed, and all should get the best support available start breastfeeding once the baby arrives.” (Ibid.)
Why, if it is the natural way to feed a baby, does it seem so hard to breastfeed? Why do so many mothers try and fail? Why do so many pediatricians advise moms to stop breastfeeding and switch to formula at the first sign of trouble?
The American Academy of Pediatrics strongly recommends breastfeeding without giving the baby any other foods for the first six months, and that breastfeeding continue with the gradual addition of other foods in the second half of baby’s first year. They recommend “that breastfeeding continue for at least 12 months, and thereafter for as long as mutually desired.” (American Academy of Pediatrics Work Group on Breastfeeding, Breastfeeding and the Use of Human Milk, Pediatrics Vol 100 No. 6, December, 1997, p.1037)
In spite of this strong position on the importance of breastfeeding, many nurses, doctors and other health care providers do not have the specific training needed to adequately help mothers and babies who are experiencing breastfeeding difficulty. Often breastfeeding failure happens because hospital procedures in the hours and days after the baby’s birth prevent the normal progression of lactogenesis (the process by which the mother’s milk supply is established) or a misunderstanding of the newborn’s feeding patterns leads to the early use of bottles and pacifiers in the absence of a medical need for such intervention. This causes subtle changes in the way the baby sucks, and makes some babies begin to refuse the breast and to prefer the very rapid flow of milk from the bottle. Even if a baby has had some bottles and has begun to show a preference for the bottle rather than the breast, it is not too late! Most young babies can learn to breastfeed effectively, and most mothers can establish a good milk supply with the right kind of help and support.
Board Certified Lactation Consultants have special training in helping overcome some of these breastfeeding problems. The earlier a mother gets help, the easier it should be to establish breastfeeding even if a mom and baby have a rough start and encounter problems in the beginning. Other good sources of help are La Leche League, a volunteer organization with chapters in most places in the USA and Canada, as well as in many other countries. In the USA, most local WIC offices have resources to help mothers who want to breastfeed their babies. Go to http://www.ilca.org/falc.html for a list of Certified Lactation Consultants in your area.
While it is ideal for mother and baby to be together so that baby can feed frequently during the day and night, many moms today face the reality of returning to the workplace within weeks of the baby’s birth. It is entirely possible to provide your milk to your baby even if you must be separated for many hours of the day. Do not let the necessity of working outside your home rob you and your baby of this priceless gift.
Look for the information about pumping if you must be away from your baby and still want to provide him/her with your milk.
Breast-feeding is the gold standard for your baby!

It becomes very easy when you have the baby tied up in the baby carrier wraps. In addition to the daily work, you can also get a respite when you are traveling long distances.
Baby hip carriers are very similar to the baby carrier wraps. Both of these baby carriers offer good support and solace to the mother and the babies. They are very good gift items and can be given during the christening celebrations. If baby carrier wraps are best suited for smaller babies, the baby hip carriers a most suited for bigger babies. Most of the times, when parents carry bigger babies, they feel a lot of pressure on the arms and the back. This can even lead back pain and other complications may also occur.
After you have identified the need for a good baby carrier, the next task is to buy the one that suits your budget and taste. When you are buying baby carrier wraps or baby hip carriers, you need to look out at three most important aspects. They are:

The condition may turn severe hence cleanliness should be given first preference. Ask the cleaners or dryers to wash and clean your baby carrier wraps or baby hip carriers in case you don’t have facility to do so.Problem with dust mites is that they invite allergies and chronic problems in babies. Your infant may develop asthmatic conditions hence careful approach must be your first priority. Consult professional cleaners or dryers to wash your baby carrier wraps or baby hip carriers if you are not able to maintain them.

Babies Born by C-Section More Vulnerable
When infants are born by cesarean section they miss receiving important good bacteria from their mothers. Missing this, according to Professor Patricia Conway, leaves them more vulnerable to health problems such as asthma and allergies.
Professor Patricia Conway of the School of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences at the University of New South Wales, warns that babies miss out on the good bacteria they need that is found in their mother’s birth canal. As this bacteria grows on the skin, it eventually makes its way into the baby’s intestines. There it can colonize and make the beginnings of a balanced and healthy immune system.
“With a c-section, the newborn baby misses an opportunity to pick up a lot of Mum’s good bacteria,” Professor Conway said. “This can have long-term health implications, as the development of a good intestinal ecosystem is necessary for health and immunity to allergies, from childhood right through to adulthood.”
While c-sections that occur after labor has begun allow babies to be exposed to some of the necessary bacterial, elective cesarean sections have more sterile conditions. If the waters have already broken, some of the good bacteria does make its way to the baby.
Other studies have shown that infants born vaginally and those born by c-section have different white blood cells, which may affect how their bodies respond to illnesses. Australian College of Midwives vice-president Hannah Dahlen says infants born by c-section also miss important hormonal signals that occur during labor and teach their bodies how to handle stresses.
”In labour, the baby has a gradual escalation in its stress response and then a gradual decline. Research has shown that this could prime our bodies to respond to stress in a certain way,” she said.
”With a c-section, there is a cold cut and the baby has a dramatic stress response. It could be setting that child up to always over-respond to stress.”
Missing out on the good bacteria and hormone changes cold be to blame for the higher rates of asthma, diabetes, and some cancers Dahlen feels.
Babies also receive some of their mother’s bacteria after birth through breastfeeding and skin-to-skin contact. However, studies from Europe still show that babies born by c-section are 20 percent more likely to develop diabetes.

Dangerous Compounds In Cheap Baby Containers
We can find these chemicals in other types of plastics like food containers and the lining of baby food jars. Since plastic is widely used for food it becomes hard to escape it. The chemicals in which we are talking about are BPA and PVC.
Pregnant women should always avoid canned foods and any types of plastic that might susceptible to leeching chemicals. They can not only harm the mother but they can be devastating to an unborn child.
There are ways to determine which types of plastics contain bad chemicals, like the SPI code. These will give you the details of the plastic itself. The symbols you find on the bottom of your container will usually indicate if they contain BPA.
But knowing what the numbers are is an important step. After locating the triangle you will notice a number floating in the middle of it. Number 1 is usually inherent of being free of BPA and safe to use. Number 2 is usually found on children's toys which makes it okay to play with. Number 5 if often found with milk bags and cold food items. And a number 7 is given to a lot of plastics because there are many other classes of plastics but the government wasn't able to spend time to give them each an individual number.
Now you have a better idea of what to look for and prevent harm to an unborn baby. Taking small steps like using glass instead of plastic is just one of many ways to prevent complications.

Do Baby Walkers Help Train Babies to Walk?
While there are many baby products like strollers or car seats that are absolutely essential for your baby, there is always a question concerning the need and importance of a baby walker. Many parents tend to think that a walker will help their baby learn to walk easily and quickly. Walkers certainly can keep your child safe from many potential dangers, while keeping him entertained. They also help in strengthening his lower leg muscles. Walkers definitely allow your child to get around the house quickly and with ease. But the major concern is – does the walker really encourage your baby to walk?
Parents have been using a baby walker as an aid to amuse and keep their babies occupied while they are busy with other important chores. Many parents also believe that they can use this plaything to train their babies to walk. But this does not always work. A normal baby’s development follows a very definite development pattern which is more commonly known as baby milestone. With each milestone, a baby develops a specific skill that is needed for his normal functioning. So, learning how to sit will follow only after the baby has mastered his head control. And sitting in balance gradually prepares your baby to crawl, then stand and eventually walk on his own.
Though a walker stimulates development, a baby will walk only when he is really ready for it. A baby walker does strengthen the lower leg muscles of your baby but not the upper leg and hip muscles. Only when all his muscles are strong enough to keep him upright and allow him to balance himself properly, your baby will learn to walk. Babies learn to walk in part by watching and understanding how their feet and legs move. If a walker has a tray, which in most cases it will, a child will not be able to see what is happening with his lower body and this causes delay in motor development skills.
Moreover, if very small babies are put in the walkers and made to spend most of their early weeks in a walking ring, they almost always end up walking on their toes. This walking style is abnormal and messes your child’s balance when he really starts to walk independently. Also it is observed that many babies who spend a lot of time in walkers struggle to or never crawl. This again hinders their natural development. An injury to your baby’s head caused by a walker falling over is also a major safety concern.
The bottom line is that an all-in-one activity walker rarely encourages your baby to walk sooner. However, this does not make a baby walker completely forbidden for your baby. As long as you use it for short periods under proper supervision, it will turn out to be your baby’s best friend. Put on a neat pair of infant socks on his little feet and let your baby spend some entertaining time in his baby wal

25 Reasons Why Babies Cry
It’s hard to define whether crying is excessive, as the crying behavior varies from baby to baby. Some babies can be calmed easily but some are difficult to sooth.
The causes of crying extend from simple reasons to life threatening conditions. While it is prudent to investigate every crying, it is also good to know that some babies cry habitually without any real reasons, but will stop gradually.
Here is a list of the common causes of a baby crying.
1) Hunger
One of the more common reasons is a hungry baby, who will cry until he gets the milk.
2) Wetting
Urination and defecation cause some discomfort and results in crying till he is cleaned and made dry .
3) Company
Some babies need someone near. Or when his comfort item like a favourite doll slips away from the grip, he cries.
4) Fatigue
When the baby is tired but unable to sleep, he’ll simply cry.
5) Heat and cold
If he feels too hot or too cold he becomes restless and cry. Ensure there is good ventilation and the room temperature is just right.
6) Tight clothing
Tight clothes especially during warm weather is intolerable for babies. Tight elastic of the dress can also cause soreness in the hip area.
7) Dark room
When the baby wakes up from sleep he needs some dim light. If there is complete darkness he will cry.
8) Mosquitoes
Yes, these insects disturb the sleep by their blood sucking, causing itch and making the baby cry.
9) Nasal blockage
The infant may not be able to sleep when there is nasal blockage and will keep on crying until the passage is clear.
10) Phlegm in throat
This also causes difficult breathing. Sometimes a typical sound can be heard with each breath.
11) General aching
Generalized body ache with restlessness is seen in flu and prodromal stages of some infectious diseases. The baby cries as a result.
12) Nappy rash
If a tight and wet nappy is kept for a long time, a nappy rash may develop. The rash can also be due to some allergic response to the elastic material of the nappy. Other skin problems like eczema, ecthyma, candidiasis etc can also cause discomfort in the baby.
13) Ear ache
Ear infection is prevalent especially in wet climate. Ear ache commonly becomes worse at night when lying down. The child will become restless and an older toddler may show signs of rubbing the affected ear regularly.
14) Colic
When the baby cries continuously, it is common to diagnose it as colic. This is still a topic for debate because the real cause for colic is not known. Colic may be associated with rumbling and distention of abdomen. The child often feels better when lying on his abdomen.
15) Infections
All infections cause some kind of pain or irritation, resulting in crying. The infection may be anywhere in the body. Usually it is associated with fever, redness and swelling.
16) Reaction to certain food
Some food articles can give rise to allergic reactions. Allergy is manifested in the form of redness, breathlessness, gastric symptoms and continuous crying.
17) Hard stools
Constipated babies with hard stools may cry when they get the urge to pass out the stool.
18) Gastro-esophageal reflex (or acid reflux)
This is due to failure of the lower part of the esophagus to close after food consumption, causing regurgitation from the stomach. It is difficult to diagnose this condition but can be treated by giving anti-reflex medicine. Again, a doctor’s advice is required.
19) Dentition (teething)
During dentition a child becomes restless with crying. This may be accompanied by gastric troubles or diarrhoea.
Apart from the common reasons, there are some rare reasons, but it’s best left to the doctor to diagnose as timely treatment is crucial.
20) Bowel obstruction
Bowel obstruction is associated with severe pain and vomiting. The abdomen is distended with rumbling sound. The baby is constipated with absence of flatus.
21) Septicemia
Invasion of pathogenic micro organisms into the blood is called septicemia. Fever is associated with this condition.
22) Torsion of testes in male kids
When a baby boy cries continuously his scrotum should be examined. The torsion of the testes causes severe pain which will be tender to touch at the affected testes. When the testes is pressed upwards pain is relieved. If this is not treated timely it can damage the affected testes due to lack of blood supply.
23) Meningitis
Initially there may not be fever, therefore crying baby with alternate vacant stare and irritability should not be ignored. Neck rigidity and seizures may appear later.
24) Retention of urine
Children with retention of urine will have agonising pain making them restless.
25) Major injuries
A major injury to any parts of the body causes pain. Falling from height is a common reason, and may result in head injury. Head injury is associated with reflex vomiting and convulsions.

Babies Safety - Tips For New Parents
To make sure that you are safe in your own house, be sure to lock all the doors while you are only with your baby alone. This is critical especially if you live in a big city. Buying home safety equipments is also a very recommended action. Protect your baby from anything that can hurt him/her. For example, close all the electric sockets while not in use. Lock all the doors, windows, cupboards so that your baby can not open it.
You also should watch your pet if you have one at home. You surely do not want it harm your baby, even though to you it always be gentle. Not only a pet can harm your baby by their triggered action (like it bites your baby because it is upset when you baby suddenly touch it) but also by their biological belongings. Like cat's fur may cause an allergic effect to your baby or unhygienic body of pet can cause a severe diarrhea if your baby touches it.
When you put your baby to sleep, make sure that he/she sleeps on his/her back, to prevent a crib death. Crib death is a death which mostly suffered by babies due to suffocating during their sleep. You should also keep loose blanket out of crib. Because the crib is supposed to be a place to sleep, not to play. Your baby's crib should have fences that are dense enough to prevent him/her from escaping, slipping or falling to the floor.
When your baby starts to crawl, you'd better get a walker soon, so that he/she can learn to walk right in time. If you house has steps, make sure that the steps have a gate (upward) which can be locked. You easily understand that this is to prevent him/her from falling downward. Remember, baby is to be kept out of danger but your pet also needs to kept away from your baby. Use the gate as well to keep it away from your baby.
When your baby starts to walk, keep him/her away from sharp edge of table/desk or of any other furniture. You should also put anything hot/sharp/hard away from his/her distance, so that he/she can not reach it. Your valuable belonging should also be kept in proper place, you know why. Last, but of course not least (since many things we can do to protect our babies), keep away small particles from his/hr reach because he/she tends to swallow it which seriously harm him/her.
Babies Do Learn While Sleeping
Have you ever wondered what is going on in your baby’s head? Even when he or she is sleeping? I am sure that like me, you spent many a hour watching your newborn sleep. Sometimes you’d be rewarded by baby sounds or a slight smile. And you get to wonder, what is going on in that little brain?
Researchers of the University of Florida give us this answer: newborn babies are learning while they are sleeping!
Newborns Learn Even While Sleeping
Right after delivery, babies spend most of time sleeping, up to 18 hours a day. Yet, the first few days and weeks of a baby’s life is also a period of rapid development when babies learn to react to their surroundings, from learning to see to recognizing sounds. So when do they get the time to learn all these things? The researchers believe that newborn babies learn all the time, awake or asleep. In fact, newborns can be considered data sponges, processing data while in dreamland.
The researchers demonstrated this by simultaneously sounding a tone and blowing a gentle puff of air into a sleeping baby’s eyelids. After repeating this several times, the researcher sounded the tone without the puff of air. The results showed that most babies reacted to the tone by squeezing their eyelids instinctively. This reaction was reflected in changes in brain waves as measured by ECG.
Do Adults Learn While Sleeping Too?
Unfortunately not. Babies’ sleeping patterns are different from those of adults. Their sleeping state is relative “more active” with changeable breathing and heart rates, a state which allows babies to experience the world without being truly awake. Their brains are different, too, with more neural plasticity that allows to be changed by experience.
The results are interesting from a learning point of view but it can have some consequences on early screening for developmental and neurological problems, including autism and dyslexia.
But next time you look at your sleeping baby, you’ll have an idea what’s going inside his or her head. Your baby is listening, experiencing, learning what’s around – including you.

Based on these findings, Lora Heller has established a unique school for babies in New York. Known as Baby Fingers, the school has been successfully helping babies develop stronger verbal communication skills through the teaching of sign language in combination with music. The effectiveness of this approach to teaching lies in the fact that sign language and music share a certain rhythmic quality. In other words, both require the learner to keep a steady beat. In addition, while teaching sign language can help babies develop basic communication, singing songs can help them solidify their vocabulary after they begin to communicate verbally.
As a result of these similarities, teaching music and sign language, in combination, can help babies and children below five develop spatial reasoning and socialization skills while encouraging them to communicate better.
It was her background in music therapy and deaf education that made Heller aware of the potential benefits of using both to help babies develop the ability to communicate before learning to speak. So far, her methods of teaching have produced results not only in babies, but also in deaf children and children with deaf parents. They have also helped bridge the communication gap between English-speaking children and their parents with a first language other than English.
In addition, children with behavioral issues and a lack of ability to communicate in times of distress have been able to overcome their limitations due to the teaching of music alongside sign language.
Parents are encouraged to enroll their babies before the completion of their first year; preferably at four to six months, though toddlers and preschoolers still benefit from the program. It is also recommended that parents learn to sign, as this can enhance the bond between parents and children; babies often enjoy watching and responding to sign language. As a result, teaching parents sign language can lead to early learning and long-term retention, on the part of babies, of this system of communication. In addition, parents who know sign language can effectively use it to teach their babies social skills and manage behavioral issues.
Baby Fingers uses American Sign Language [ASL] as its medium of instruction. The advantages of using ASL is the fact that it has its own grammar and syntax and is the standardized sign language used for teaching and sharing knowledge. Teaching babies through ASL will, therefore give them a solid foundation in a sign language that is universally recognized and can be easily used outside their classes at Baby Fingers. In addition to center based classes around the NYC-metro area, Webinars are available to families that do not live near the Baby Fingers neighborhoods. Families across the globe can learn to sign along with Lora Heller right from the comfort of their own home computer.

Why Babies Cry And How To Tell What They Want
Some thought that a baby cries more during the afternoon accounting it to the anxiousness of the mother or the stressed mood of the father after going home from work. But the most accepted assumption now is that babies have this automatic screening ability they use to shut off all the noise that may stimulate some response from them so they could get enough rest. But in the long run, this filter weakens and totally disappears during the approximate age of six weeks. This, then, make a baby very sensitive to the external factors such as noise, movements, etc. And these generally elicit a reaction from a baby and how best he or she could respond but only through crying.
There are many reasons why a baby succumbs to crying. Deciphering these reasons is the major feat a parent must surmount. Here are some of the things your baby is making you understand through crying.
Hunger. Yes, your attention-hungry baby is craving to let you know that his tummy is grumbling. This is the most common reason for a baby to cry, especially, during his early months. The pattern of the hunger howl could be characterized as being persistent, demanding and almost rhythmical. But that rhythm is not at any rate close to becoming musical, of course.
Boredom. What can I say? Aren’t these babies just plain spoiled? Crying because of boredom, errr, I’d find that a bit more twisted or weird if it’s with an adult that is. But babies are really built like this. Crying is their way of telling you, “Hey get me a life here!” Aside from attention and food, consequently, babies need a lot of stimulation. And when they don’t get this, there you get your waaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhh!!! The trick is to pick the baby up and play with him. This move may be frowned upon by some because of its amounting to spoiling the baby. But it is important to know that stimulation is also one of the major necessities of an infant and it won’t hurt to provide him with some while in his growing age. This boredom cry is said to be also rhythmical and full of sobs and moans.
Discomfort. pain is another precursor of the baby’s crying. Who won’t cry when in pain, right? Babies are not major pains to endure the most excruciating discomfort they could undergo. They are little, vulnerable beings that need to be attended to when injured or when in an inconvenient situation. This cry could be more persistent, louder and more demanding. Shrieking and screaming, those are words that better describe the crying pattern roused by pain.
Another cause may be disturbance; surely, howling will proceed just when they’re about to sleep or are already fast asleep and suddenly gets surprised by some noise, or movement. An illness that causes discomfort to a baby may also be the reason for a baby’s bursting into fit of tears.

Sign of Baby Ready for Solid Food
Therefore, as parents, we need to know exactly when the right time to give your baby solid foods.
Signs of baby ready for his solid foods are:
- Do not push food out with his tongue.
- Able to withstand her head with the neck upright.
- Can sit upright in order to swallow food properly.
- Usually the baby is ready to eat solid food when their weight reaches twice the birth weight.
- To start a non-liquid food, the baby’s mouth has started to move food toward the back and swallow it.
- Baby seems still hungry, despite having a lot of milk. We can say baby got a lot of milk if they have got milk from your breast (left and right breast), or they got 250 ml of infant formula.
- Babies woke up earlier or they woke up at night whereas they could sleep all night long before.
- Babies often bite their finger or try to put things into their mouth.
- Babies show interest in your food. In this case, the baby may be looking at your rice dishes, and then began trying to reach food on a plate and put it into his mouth.

Babies Love Boxes !
Parents often go overboard when buying Christmas presents for their children, especially when that child is their first. What parents find out, after their babies are old enough to sit up and play, is that babies usually love boxes more than the toys that were originally in them.
Don’t become too discouraged. It happens to nearly every parent. When someone suggests that you may not want to spend so much on actual gifts because an infant won’t be able to appreciate them, you might want to listen. If they have children of their own, you may be able to avoid some of the same frustrations they’ve had.
What is it about boxes that draw the attention of babies? Part of the appeal may be that boxes are large and easily manipulated. Boxes are also lightweight so they won’t hurt if the baby drops them. Finally, as everyone knows, nothing tastes better than cardboard!
Since babies love boxes so much, don’t fight it. Take advantage of their interest in boxes to begin to teach them to use their imagination. Your baby won’t totally develop their sense of imaginative play until they are pre-school age, but there’s no reason to wait too long before encouraging this type of play.
Actually, if you haven’t looked at toys lately, you can buy pretend food to use in play kitchens. These are smaller than normal foods, so they’re easy for little children to handle. There are also plastic foods that are safe for children to put in their mouths.
One box that parents probably have in large numbers is wipe boxes. Not only can they be used to store small things in, they can be used to build with like building blocks. If your baby is a boy, he can put his chunky cars in the box and then take them out and play with them. Little girls, once they start playing with baby dolls, can put their baby’s clothes in the wipe boxes and even use the wipe box as a bed.
With babies, it seems that simple is best. They really don’t need to have toys with all the bells and whistles. Lights and noises at this age may get their attention, but they may not hold that attention for long. Give them a couple of small boxes and they’ll be happy for quite some time.
As your baby grows, they have the potential to turn almost anything into a toy. They’ll find things in your home that you may not wish them to play with, so be concerned about baby-proofing your home.
Babies grow up so fast. One minute they’re brand new, small, and helpless. The next thing you know, they’re trying to get around on their own. Give them simple things to play with. Babies love boxes and they’re great items to help them use their imagination.

Photographing Babies For Baby Modeling And Baby Photo Constests
When photographing babies it is very important to be particularly careful about lighting, because it is quite difficult to get it just right. This is what baby modeling is all about. It takes some experience when it comes to adjusting the lighting for baby photographs. You must familiarize yourself with everything that is involved in providing the right lighting for any kind of photography.
Once you have got the basic set up in place, you can make whatever adjustments that are necessary to get the lighting just right for any situation. If you have to use diffuse light you can either use an umbrella or a softbox.
Personally, I like to use the softbox when photographing in the studio, but when I have to photograph the subject at home, I like to use the translucent umbrella through which I can take the picture. The softbox is superior to translucent umbrellas in that it directs all light forward without allowing any of it to escape.
The umbrella on the other hand allows some light to escape through the edges and this light is reflected on to the camera. This would cause a flare. You would therefore be well advised, when shooting through a brolly, to take a few trial shots, making sure to always use the lens hood.
You can get a very nice effect using a see-through umbrella if you make sure that you use your flash gun into umbrella, and get the light to reflect on the subject. If you use this method you must make sure that you are quite close to the subject.
If the flash is too far, it will create harsh shadows that will spoil the lovely effect of diffused lighting. Reflective umbrellas provide lighting that is too harsh for portrait photography.
For portrait work, translucent umbrellas through which you can shoot are far better. Reflective umbrellas are good for lighting the background. You can use them portrait work if you prefer harsh light.
But I can assure you that parents will much rather have their babies photographed in a soft light because these portraits produce a charming image. It will be very difficult to keep a baby still, posing for the photograph.
For this reason it would be best if the lighting is not fussy and complicated. If you require the lighting to be positioned in a very precisely, and focused on a particular spot, you may find that by the time you are ready the baby has moved from the ideal position for the lighting to be effective.
For this reason it is best to keep the lighting simple. You can give yourself a lot of room for maneuvering by using two large softboxes. You will also find that a more or less flat and uniform lighting will give you excellent results when photographing babies. I like to use a main light situated at about 35 to 45 degrees to one side of the baby.
This main light is usually a reflective umbrella or a diffused light through a softbox. In addition, I would have a fill light, which would be a diffused light beside the camera at 1/3 to ½ less exposure. Finally, I adjust the light to produce a flattering picture of the baby.
This will depend on the facial features of the baby. For example, a baby with very fine features will require a harder or less diffused light. You can get this by moving the main light closer to 45 degrees.
If on the other hand the baby has large, sharp features, or has a rash or blemishes on its skin, you can produce a more flattering photograph of the baby by moving the main light to be at a 35 degree angle to the subject. The main light will now be closer to the camera at the back, and would decrease the difference in the intensity of the main light and the fill light, giving a softer effect.
You must never overdo the use of harder light when trying to produce a dramatic effect. When I use harder light I move the main light to between 45 and 55 degrees, while keeping the fill light close to the camera.
If you wish to deepen the shadow areas you might reduce the intensity of the fill light. However, I find that with baby photography it is best to keep the ratio under one stop. If you are planning on joining a baby photo contest.
